    Description

1891 Singer Coffin Top Fiddle Base Treadle Sewing Machine, Victorian Pattern with shuttle. This machine sews as beautifully today as it did when it was made in 1891. It astonishes me that this machine was made 12 years before the Wright Brothers flew at Kitty Hawk, and Benjamin Harrison was the president of the United States. This is a long shuttle, fiddle base machine fitted in a 5 drawer base. The cover is known as a Coffin Top.
From what I can read, this is the last of the 19th-century' fiddle base' machines made by Singer. Apparently, this model V.S. 2 was introduced in 1887 and I found out that early versions of the V.S. 2 have a fiddle-shaped base like this one, which was gradually phased out with production ending in 1891. Later versions of the V.S. 2 have a rectangular bed..
