Description
This is aCasige #6
Toy Sewing Machine,
manufactured in Germany, from 1902-1910
History:
Casige was started in the mid-1800's making Locks
(Hence the Eagle holding a Key, as their logo)
. They jumped into the toy sewing machine business in 1902. They made a lot of different toys, but I found little info on what years, for each toy model, except that only the earliest models were made of Cast Iron.
Later models were made of Sheet Metal, starting around 1910.
Dating:
This is the most beautiful of the early Casige Cast Iron Toy Sewing Machines. Since Casige didn't start making toys until 1902, & began making their machines out of sheet metal in 1910, I think it's safe to say 1902-1910 as the date range.
Details:
This quite Rare Beauty came to me in serious need of some love. I stripped it down, de-rusted, & repainted the originally painted parts, then applied gold decals. I hand painted the flowers in White & Blue, with a tiny bit of green for the stems, then sprayed it with a clear protective finish. Lastly, I polished up all the hardware, & now she Looks Wonderful, & turns so smoothly!
(see the video above. : )
Less than ideal:
* The Sewing plate was in pretty rough shape, so I had to grind it down a lot, to get it as shiny as it is. The Casige Logo is partially gone. It clearly shows Part of the wings, the
Eagle's feet & Key, plus
the text below it, but the rest is no longer visible.
So Cool:
Notice the unusual Bow Ties on the sides of the casting. Just gorgeous, & I love the cast iron leaf work on the legs of the base. So intricate, & well done. You don't see that much fine detailing everyday on toys.
I was also surprised to find an Original Leather Washer behind the Stitch Length adjustment lever. I've torn down a lot of machines, & never seen a leather washer before.
(See picture 11 for location & closeup)
Colors:
The hardest part for me is taking accurate photos. They often come out nearly black (
too many windows in my room
), so I'm forced to use Google to adjust the colors. My walls are a very light minty/aqua green, my desk is honey brown, & the turntable is Teal. The machine is jet black, & the decals are shiny Gold, with White & medium Blue painted flowers & a couple tiny Green stems. Some pictures show weird textures & lord help me if there's a speck of lint - It will Scream that, & you can't even see any of that with the naked eye. I tried my best to get it right, but your monitor may not see it the same as mine, so if my wall looks tan to you - know you're not seeing the true colors. (
Bear in mind this is a toy, & you're looking at a magnification.
)
Mechanically:
* There are no cracks, or repairs on the machine.
*
Hand crank
turns freely, with the original Handle.
* Original
Gears
are clean, with no broken teeth.
* Original
Thread Spool Pin
is present, including the original
Brass Nut
on top.
*
Feed Dogs
go up & down when crank is turned, but doesn't feed. Not sure why.
*
Looper
is present, & operates as intended.
*
Needle
& it's set screw are absent (
I did not have anything that fit either hole - it's pretty small
)
** I can not attest to the
stitch quality
, as I don't have a needle that fits, but I see no reason why this would not stitch if you find one, given the the manufacturer.
** For this reason, this machine is being
Sold
As Is
.
Casige made wonderful toys, & most work quite well, if you have a needle that fits.
*** Any item of this age is going to show nicks & dings, as well as some pitting, which can be seen in the photos.
